When we met with Mark and Melanie, they brought us a pile of documents to help them sort though. First, we looked at their student loan and credit card debt and helped them come up with a payoff plan. Then, we looked at his retirement benefits through work to help maximize those. We also put a portfolio together of the funds available in his 401(k). Mark was also getting significant stock options through work, and we came up with a strategy for him to diversify their single-stock risk. We helped them set up tax advantaged accounts for their children’s college education and a savings amount that would help fund those goals. Lastly, we suggested an amount of term life insurance that would replace his income and cover their family should something happen to Mark.
